Survivorship: The next phase of care

Cancer survivorship is more than surviving cancer. It starts from the time you are diagnosed, and continues after treatment. At Nebraska Medicine, survivorship even includes your family, friends and caregivers. Cancer and its treatment can result in long-lasting or late-onset effects. Our program address various problems cancer survivors may face after therapy ends.

One in 20 adults in the U.S. is a cancer survivor – the number of survivors has quadrupled since the 1970s. The need for long-term follow-up care has grown, and it's why our Survivorship Program exists today. You are not alone. Our goal is to help you transition from treatment back into your normal life, and to help you stay as healthy as possible for the long-term.

Our clinics

We offer a few different survivorship clinics. When you call for an appointment, it will be scheduled with one of the following three clinics:

  • Our General Survivorship Clinic offers comprehensive services to people who have completed cancer treatment. It focuses on any needs you have related to your cancer care, including cancer screenings, future health risks due to cancer treatment and your overall health and wellness.
  • The Bone Marrow Transplant Long-Term Follow-Up Survivorship Clinic is for survivors who have received an allogenic bone marrow or stem cell transplant. People who have received this treatment often have unique ongoing medical and psychological concerns.
  • And our Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer Survivorship Clinic is available to adults who were diagnosed with cancer as a child. Most of these patients are transferred into this clinic once they age out of pediatric care.

What to expect

During your first survivorship clinic visit we will:

  • Perform a one-on-one comprehensive medical examination
  • Explain late and long-term effects of cancer and treatment
  • Recommend healthy lifestyle behaviors to reduce complications and lower the risk of additional cancers
  • Provide an individualized cancer treatment summary and a survivorship care plan

Our staff will work with you to understand how they can best manage any complications or issues you may be experiencing. Together, we'll develop a plan to support your current and future health needs. This plan will also be communicated to your primary health care provider, because we are all part of your team.
