Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in U.S. men. However, when found early, the prognosis improves significantly. Nebraska Medicine is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. Thanks to innovative surgery and imaging techniques, as well as targeted radiation therapy, we are continually improving the long-term outlook for men with prostate cancer.
What to expect
Before your first appointment, our prostate cancer specialists will review your medical history and begin working on a personalized treatment plan. During your evaluation, additional testing may be needed to help determine the best course of treatment.
The field of radiation therapy, or radiation oncology, has been revolutionized in the past two decades. With recent advancements, it is more targeted and precise than ever. Nebraska Medicine radiation oncologists have the knowledge and expertise to deliver the most comprehensive care in the state. Our radiation oncologists are focused solely on genitourinary malignancies. Their treatment recommendations for prostate cancer are based on the newest data and technology.
Targeted treatment options for prostate cancer could include:
- Intensity-modulated radiation therapy
- Volumetric-modulated arc therapy
- Stereotactic ablative radiation therapy
- High-dose-rate brachytherapy
Nebraska Medical Center is the only hospital in the region providing high-dose-rate brachytherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer, a technique proven to have the highest cure rates for prostate cancer.
Removal of the prostate is a preferred treatment option for prostate cancer patients who have a life expectancy of more than 10 years and the cancer is still within the prostate. These patients may qualify for a minimally invasive procedure called robotic prostatectomy. Patients who undergo robotic prostatectomy require less pain medication and experience far less blood loss compared to both open surgery and laparoscopic prostatectomy.
Other treatments, such as radiation therapy or freezing of the prostate may be considered for patients 60 and older.
