Raynaud's Phenomenon/Syndrome

Raynaud’s Phenomenon (sometimes called Disease or Syndrome) is a rare disorder of the blood vessels, usually in the fingers and toes. It causes blood vessels to narrow when you are cold or feeling stressed. When this happens, blood can’t get to the surface of the skin and the affected areas turn white and blue. When blood flow returns, the skin turns red and throbs or tingles.

Doctors are not sure what causes Raynaud’s Phenomenon. A physical exam and review of your medical history is needed to make a diagnosis and to rule out other medical problems. Once a diagnosis is made, self-care and prevention is a big part of staying healthy. Doctors may prescribe medication to widen the blood vessels and promote circulation.
