The Nebraska Medicine PGY2 Ambulatory Care Residency offers a unique and stimulating learning environment that provides comprehensive clinical training in ambulatory care pharmacy practice. A resident completing this program will be a competent practitioner in the care of ambulatory patients and qualified to function as a highly skilled ambulatory care practitioner within a health system or academic setting. The goals and objectives for this program align with ASHP Ambulatory Care PGY2 Accreditation Standards.

The resident will be integrally involved with health care professionals throughout the continuum of patient care, including patient assessment, education, and therapeutic recommendations. Working with experienced pharmacy clinicians, the resident will also gain experience serving as a preceptor for PGY1 pharmacy residents and pharmacy students. Residents will provide compassionate, evidence-based, progressive medical care. The program allows tailored instruction for the individual based on interests and past experiences.

Service Commitment (Staffing) Experience

PGY2 residents are required to fulfill the service commitment (staffing) designed to ensure that residents gain experience and can function as competent ambulatory care practitioners. Each resident will train with preceptors during the first half of the residency year across multiple clinical sites, including Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. Throughout this time, the designated preceptors and resident will evaluate the resident’s progression toward independence to ensure the resident is prepared to advance to their staffing rotation.
As part of the service commitment for PGY2 residents, the following staffing requirements apply:

  • PGY2 ambulatory care resident will staff at least one day per week from January through June during normal rotation hours.
    • Staffing will occur primarily within the Patient-Centered Medical Home Primary Care clinics; however, staffing may occur within other clinics as determined by the program director.

    • Staffing will include shifts providing coverage as an ambulatory care pharmacist.

  • Residents may be asked to staff additional hours outside of normal rotation hours (e.g., on-call or weekends) to meet the needs of the health care system.
