Importance of calling 911 and your response

Seconds count: If you believe you are experiencing a heart attack, call 911 right away.

Calling 911 can help you receive treatment as soon as you call. Dispatchers are trained to instruct callers while emergency medical service (EMS) providers are on their way. When EMS arrives, they can administer lifesaving treatments before even arriving at the hospital.

Know the differences between a heart attack and cardiac arrest

Heart attacks happen when blood flow to the heart is blocked. Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart's electrical system doesn't work right and the heart stops beating correctly. Blood doesn't flow to the brain, lungs and other organs. This can happen within minutes.

What to do?

  1. Call 911 for both right away.
  2. Starting CPR, using an AED or taking medication may be advised
  3. Stay with the patient until help arrives.

How to perform hands-only CPR

When a person is in cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. According to the American Heart Association, about 90% of people who suffer out of hospital cardia arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival.
