Diagnostic tests and treatments for dry eye

Diagnostic tests

Tear Lab
Tear lab is a diagnostic test used to aid in the diagnosis and management of dry eye. High readings indicate poor tear film stability. With effective treatment, these readings should decrease.

Lipiview*
This is a diagnostic test that allows providers to view the structure of the Meibomian gland and assess the damage caused by chronic dry eye. This test helps providers properly manage dry eye.

Treatments

Lipiflow*
Lipiflow is a treatment for Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This treatment safely delivers heat and pulse-like pressure to express obstructed oil or meibum from the glands located in the upper and lower eyelid. This oil is needed to prevent the tear film from evaporating too quickly. A good tear film is essential in maintaining clear and comfortable vision.

Lumenis Optilight Intense Pulse Light (IPL)
IPL is a light-based treatment used to reduce inflammation. This treatment targets telangiectasia (abnormal blood vessels) and helps relieve dry eye symptoms. Patients with ocular rosacea would greatly benefit from this treatment.

The initial IPL treatment consists of four treatments two to four weeks apart. Most patients start to have symptom relief after the third treatment. After the initial treatment series, patients are treated on an as needed basis with a single "touch up" treatment.

*Medicare now covers the Lipiflow and Lipiview; however, patients will need to check coverage with their individual insurance.
