Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today. If you want to alter the size, shape or angle of your nose or the span of your nostrils, this may be the procedure for you. Nose reshaping may also be a viable option if you suffer from medical concerns, such as a nasal birth defect, injury or breathing issues.
Septoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct the septum, which is comprised of bone and cartilage. A deviated septum occurs when the area between your nostrils becomes misaligned. This procedure may also be combined with rhinoplasty.
Nose reshaping can be performed either through a closed or open method. A closed method uses internal incisions within the nostrils, whereas an open method includes an incision at the base of the nostrils in addition to internal incisions, to lift the skin. You may be given general anesthesia, which causes you to sleep during the procedure, or local anesthesia with sedation to numb and relax you. Incisions are typically closed with dissolvable stitches, and splints are placed inside the nose with bandages on the outside to support healing. These are removed about a week after surgery.
Pain, bruising and swelling may occur after the procedure, especially in the area around the eyes. Pain medication may be prescribed to help keep you comfortable until this pain subsides.
