HALO® laser skin resurfacing: What to expect during and after treatment
We all want flawless skin, but the truth is many people still struggle with skin imperfections, like large pores, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation and signs of aging.
While medical-grade skin care and at-home regimens can help, there is a much more powerful tool that is taking the aesthetic industry by storm – and it's available at Dreams MedSpa.
"The Sciton HALO laser is the first hybrid fractional laser that uses both ablative and nonablative technology to effectively treat multiple layers of the skin," says Ashlyn Brodahl, BSN, RN. "The ablative technology targets the top layer of the skin, while the nonablative technology focuses on the underlying layers. Together, the dual wavelengths target common skin concerns with minimal downtime."
Read on to learn more about the benefits, as well as what you can expect during and after treatment.
Benefits of HALO laser treatment
HALO laser treatments are a great way to turn back the clock on a variety of skin concerns, including:
- Hyperpigmentation, sunspots and discoloration
- Uneven texture
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Scars
HALO laser treatments can also be combined with our other services to enhance skin's appearance. For example, the HALO laser can be used in conjunction with SkinTyte™ and Forever Young BBL™ treatments to improve skin pigment and firmness.
The treatment process
Our Dreams MedSpa providers begin by numbing the specified area with a topical numbing cream. We allow the cream to penetrate for an hour before cleansing the skin and measuring the surface of each treatment area. This allows us to choose the specific settings that work best for your skin type and concerns. The aggressiveness of the treatment varies depending on your specific needs. During the treatment, your skin may appear red, and sometimes pinpoint bleeding can occur, but it will subside.
What to expect after treatment
It is normal to experience some swelling immediately following HALO laser treatment, and the skin may feel hot to the touch for a couple of hours. Applying a cold compress and sleeping upright for the first couple of nights can help alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation. You may also be prescribed an anti-inflammatory steroid and antiviral medication to reduce swelling and prevent cold sores.
Two to three days after treatment, you may notice tiny dark spots coming to the surface. These are bits of tissue that are working their way out while fresh, new skin is regenerated. It's normal for the skin to look bronzed or crusted in these areas as the skin continues to heal. Depending on the aggressiveness and location of the treatment, some peeling may occur. This can last up to seven days on the face and up to two to three weeks on the neck and chest. During this time, you may also experience itchiness. It's important not to scratch, as that can cause scarring and pigmentation changes. It's also best to avoid wearing makeup or sweating until your skin has fully healed. Additionally, you should refrain from being in the sun for prolonged periods or tanning for at least one to two months after treatment.
You'll likely see an improvement in your skin immediately after healing, but it can take about a month for the new collagen and elastin to form. Results differ based on the aggressiveness and number of treatments. Once the healing process is complete, your skin will have a rosy, pink glow that will eventually subside. If you need more than one treatment, you can schedule them every four to six weeks.
What to consider before seeking HALO laser treatment
Before treatment, we encourage you to schedule an in-person consultation to discuss your specific skin care needs. Anyone with an active skin infection, skin grafts or a history of scarring should avoid HALO laser treatments. The Sciton HALO laser is also not intended for anyone who is currently pregnant, breastfeeding or taking an oral retinoid, such as Accutane.
