You asked, we answered: Which personal lubricant is best?
Question
Which personal lubricant is best?
Answer from OB-GYN Katie Lessman, MD
When it comes to personal lubricants, there isn’t a single “best choice.” However, Uberlube, Replens and coconut oil are often recommended by gynecologists.
The benefits of coconut oil are that it’s long-lasting, readily available and less likely than most commercial products to cause irritation. However, coconut oil can stain sheets and clothing. Also, all oils, including coconut oil and commercial lubricants containing oil, aren’t recommended with latex condoms because they increase the risk of condom breakage. Oils can be used with plastic condoms, however.
If vaginal dryness is associated with low estrogen levels, gynecologists often recommend Rephresh, Revaree and coconut oil. Your OB-GYN may also prescribe vaginal estrogen.
Lubricants don’t cause infections. However, many commercial lubricants have long lists of ingredients that are hard to pronounce. These chemicals may cause discomfort and irritation during and after use. And unfortunately, low estrogen levels can also make you more susceptible to irritation.
If your lubricant is causing irritation, consider using vegetable oils as an alternative. Again, coconut oil is an excellent choice for personal lubrication. It also has established a reputation for its many medicinal uses. But if coconut oil causes irritation, try solid vegetable shortening like Crisco. Yeast and bacteria can’t eat Crisco, so it’s unlikely to cause an infection. It can even improve the health and stretchiness of the vaginal tissue. Crisco’s also so unlikely to cause irritation that if it happens, your gynecologist would ask what else was on your hands when you applied it.
If you decide to use coconut oil or Crisco for vaginal dryness, I typically recommend a dollop on the back of your fingernail, placed as high as you can reach into the vagina, twice a day. There isn’t a danger of using too much, other than too much may stain your underwear. The best guide is to test it until you find the amount that’s right for you.
