You asked, we answered: If I get the COVID-19 vaccine while pregnant, will antibodies transmit to my baby?
Question:
I received the COVID vaccine before I got pregnant. Will antibodies transmit to my baby? Do I need to wear a mask everywhere to be safe?
Answered by maternal-fetal medicine expert Teresa Berg, MD:
Vaccine trials are continuing to monitor antibody response. There's currently a research project monitoring the transmission of antibodies from pregnant women to baby. Preliminary data looks good, but nothing is published.
There is good evidence the vaccines are effective with all variants of the virus. In fact, immunity rates appear to be over 90% for Pfizer and Moderna. The long-term immunity is also being researched through trials with testing, scheduled to continue for about two years. This means we are reassured, and the vaccine immunity is being monitored.
If we entered another high rate of viral activity, it may be a good idea to resume mask-wearing in public and be aware of the vaccine status of groups you interact with unmasked.
