What to bring and wear to surgery

What You Should Bring

  • Any information or paperwork given to you by your doctor's office
  • Insurance cards
  • Photo ID
  • Any advanced directives, living wills or powers of attorney
  • All your information will remain private and provided only to those people who need to see it for a legitimate reason
  • Any items of value should be locked up with security or sent home with your family.  The hospital is not liable for lost personal items
  • If you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea, please bring the machine, mask and tubing to the hospital.  You may need to use the machine after surgery when you are waking up

What You Should Wear

  • Glasses or contact lenses. The glasses will be removed and stored safely before you enter the operating room
  • Dentures, however you may need to remove them shortly before surgery
  • Loose fitting, comfortable clothing
  • If your surgery is on your head or neck, wear a shirt that buttons up and doesn’t have to be pulled over your head
  • If your surgery is on your abdomen, wear loose-fitting pants with an elastic waist
  • If you already have crutches and will need them after surgery, bring them along with you
  • If you would like your prescriptions filled at your local pharmacy, bring the phone and fax number of that pharmacy

What Items You Should Leave at Home

  • All jewelry including rings, earrings, watches and body piercings
  • Make-up, nail polish, hair clips and other accessories
  • Any valuables such as money and credit cards, unless you are specifically told to bring them to pay a co-payment

Personal Belongings

We encourage you to send all non-essential belongings home. Any valuables should be checked in with security at the time of your admission. Nebraska Medicine assumes responsibility for these items only when they are properly deposited in the hospital Security office safe. You are responsible for these items if they remain in your room. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Security can be reached at 402.559.5111. Any outside medical equipment must be approved prior to use.
